If you love to quilt, have we got a club for you!
The Oakland Busy Bee Quilters use their time and considerable talent to make and donate quilts. Lots of quilts. In 2018 alone, the Busy Bees made 121 of them. Approximately two-thirds of those went to veterans, with many of them being special 'wheelchair quilts' that measure 30 x 40 inches. The special size of the quilts make them long enough to keep the recipients' legs covered, but are small enough to avoid becoming entangled in the wheels. The remainder of the quilts were donated to hospice, pediatrics, and newborns.
The Busy Bees conduct an annual fundraiser to help defray the cost of quilting supplies. Most recently, the group hosted a Veterans Day luncheon and quilt raffle. The luncheon was offered free of charge for veterans, and donations from other attendees were accepted at the door. A wide variety of door prizes were awarded, and a special drawing was conducted for veterans only.
The group meets on the second Thursday and fourth Tuesday of the month at 10:00 a.m. at Elaine Byng's home in Oakland. Donations of fabric, notions, and anything quilting related would be greatly appreciated.
